U.S. Senator from Connecticut from 1949 to 1953 who was also notably a publisher of the Encyclopedia Britannica. He also established the Benton Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
He was a part of the Zeta Psi fraternity at Yale before working for advertising agencies in New York City and Chicago
He assisted the organization of the United Nations before being appointed to the Senate to fill a vacancy.
He got married to Helen Hemingway Benton.
He beat George W. Bush 's grandfather in the 1950 Senate elections.
