ABOUT WILLIAM COFFEY
Celebrated war hero who is recognized for having received the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
At the age of 25, he was a private in the 34th Regiment during the Crimean War.
He achieved the rank of sergeant during the Indian Mutiny. His Victoria Cross is displayed at Cumbria's Museum of Military Life Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, England. He was credited for saving multiple lives during a battle in the Crimean War.
He died of dysentery at Stonegravels, Chesterfield.
Both he and Cillian Murphy were born in Ireland.
