Yahya Jammeh

ABOUT YAHYA JAMMEH

Gambian politician and former military officer who served as the President of the Gambia from 1996 to 2017. Prior to ascending to the presidency, he served as the chairman of the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council from 1994 to 1996.

He led a bloodless coup to overthrow the government of Sir Dawda Jawara in July of 1994.

He was accused of stealing millions from his country during his time in office and went into exile in Equatorial Guinea in 2017. He lost the 2016 December Presidential election to Adama Barrow.

He is a Muslim and from the Jola ethnic group.

Mamadou Danso is a famous soccer player who also hails from The Gambia.
