ABOUT YOSHISHIGE YOSHIDA
Japanese director and screenwriter associated with Japanese New Wave cinema. He was known for his drama films, such as Coup d'Etat, Farewell to the Summer Light, A Promise, and Wuthering Heights. He was heavily influenced by European filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni .
He studied French literature at the University of Tokyo.
He was fluent in French. He took a 14-year hiatus from filmmaking after completing Wuthering Heights. From 1960 to 2004, he directed more than 20 films. He also earned credit as a director in television.
He was married to actress Mariko Okada from 1964 until his death in 2022.
He analyzed Yasujiro Ozu 's films in his 1998 book Ozu's Anti-Cinema.
