Director and activist known for socially-conscious films like Apostles of Civilised Vice and Law and Freedom. He has been active in LGBT and Social Justice communities.
He grew up in Salt River, Cape Town during apartheid.
He was diagnosed with HIV in 1990 and suffered from a heart attack in 2005.
He married his partner Dalli Weyers in 2005.
He was given the Nelson Mandela Health and Human Rights Award in 2003.
